CONTROL EVERYTHING

The user interface will be a native iOS and Android app, currently under development, along with the multi-platform web application usable with any smartphone or tablet and already functioning. It will include controls for light, automation, and audio-video components.

Every aspect of the user experience can be tailored, with customizable scenes, to the owner’s preferences. Besides the app, HiCan can be controlled via wearable devices, like Apple Watch, and through three touch sensors, embedded in the headboard, that can be freely programmed to set the bed in various configurations.

The system can be bi-directionally integrated with existing home or building automation systems using standard protocols, allowing control of other devices surrounding the bed (e.g. room lights and blinds, heating or air conditioning based on HiCan use scenarios), or control of the bed based on whole home scenarios (e.g. night mode, or guest welcome scenario in a hotel).

HiCan’s control system is fully autonomous and works perfectly even when not connected to the Internet. But it can also share, based on user’s preferences, its configuration with other authorized beds. If the owner uses more beds in different locations, all beds can be configured to share all pre-sets and scenarios, so that moving from one bed to another the user experience will be exactly the same. The same concept can be implemented to HiCan beds in hotels, where the user could immediately replicate his or her own HiCan settings, being recognized by the same bed via smartphone or smart watch.

Furthermore, similarly to how you receive updates to your smartphone, HiCan owners will receive updates to their bed remotely. The ability to receive these updates is free for the full life of the bed.

However the automation system of the first version of HiCan was based on traditional home or building automation off-the-shelf discrete components, increasing the installation complexity and maintenance skill levels. The new version of HiCan instead is based on an advanced custom built electronic control unit, using technology at the root of what is now called “Internet of Things”. The controller’s logic is based on the very popular Raspberry Pi computer, enhanced with the professional Strato Pi board, and it can be easily extended with additional custom hardware and software features. HiCan will be the first integrated bed platform in history based on open source software and applications. All control software is based on Sfera, an innovative open source development framework, and the HiCan software itself will be open source as well and available to everybody to create new exciting features and ultimate personalization. Leveraging the immense choices of sensors and devices that are already available or will be introduced in the future, HiCan becomes a fully customizable platform, with potential for further innovation that goes beyond the wildest imagination.
